Stress and Syntactic Symbols

The following tables list the stress and syntactic symbols supported by DECtalk Software.

·      Stress Symbols

·      Syntactic Symbols

Phoneme interpretation must be turned on for the stress and syntactic symbols to work.

Some dictionaries put the stress symbol after the vowel nucleus or at the start of the syllable. DECtalk Software requires that the stress symbol appear immediately before the vowel.

Note
Arpabet mode is a 1-2 character system. It is strongly recommended that all single character symbols be followed by a space so that faulty translations do not occur. For instance, [dh] may be translated as 2 single character sounds, ‘d’ and ‘h’ (since ‘d’ exists as a valid phoneme character) rather than as a 2 character sound of ‘dh’.
